Have you ever heard of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or also referred to as “Tapping”? Honestly, I came across it by accident but when I did, I had a “light bulb” moment and literally said out loud, “This is what I’ve been told doesn’t exist!”
I was struggling with the onset of a debilitating movement disorder and saw several neurologists who kept telling me they didn’t know what was wrong, it wasn’t in my head…but maybe just how my body was reacting to stress. No one was able to tell me how to get better or even what type of doctor I should follow up with.
I was told I just had to learn to manage stress and figure out how to live with the debilitating symptoms.
I understand managing stress is important, but how was I supposed to survive when washing my hair or walking from the car into a store was the “stress” that triggered my symptoms.
So what was wrong with me? At least once every 2 weeks I would have an episode of tremors in my lower back that caused Parkinson type movements and made it difficult to walk and function. The only way they improved was to lay in bed for a day or two and not contract my muscles. The more I moved, the worse they got.
I had my own theories of what was happening but to the neurologists whom I saw, tests did not show anything objective so I kept being told the movements were caused by “stress” and possibly something linked to my subconscious.
This was not acceptable to me and I refused to accept that I had to live with a disabling condition that had no cause or treatment.
I searched and search for help with many dead ends. The first thing that actually started to helped me was acupuncture. This opened up a whole new way of thinking for me that was “outside the box.”.
I felt supported and relieved that when I told the acupuncturist the symptoms I was having she instantly knew what was wrong from a Chinese medicine perspective and had a name to my condition! After a year of acupuncture I was at least stable enough to be able to work full time and at times actually function outside of work.
Prior to the treatment I would barely make it through a day at work and then needed to rest and sleep 12 hrs. in order to be able to function the next day. I was unable to be a wife, have any type of social or family life, and my quality of life was non existent. So even though I was slightly more stable, I continued to look for more treatments.
So how does EFT fit it?
I was trying herbal supplements, continuing acupuncture, and Chinese remedies but this was so costly and over our budget. Aside from my health issues, we were dealing with bankruptcy after a difficult adoption process for our son, my husband’s income had been decreased significantly, and I had just changed jobs. Talk about stress!
So at my new job, I was invited to a training that involved tapping on a child’s body to stimulate normalized motor movements. My boss asked if I was familiar with this and I said, “yes” thinking I had heard of it before but then realized I truly had no idea. I frantically searched the internet for “tapping on children” so I could be more prepared, but what I found was information about EFT tapping. I remember reading about it and thinking, “This is exactly what I need!”
Why didn’t any of the medical professionals whom I saw know about this and why didn’t they suggest that I look into someone trained in EFT to address my condition. Why didn’t more people know about this?
After that moment, I downloaded and listened to hundreds of interviews and training on how to do EFT. I used it frequently for myself over the next 2 years and my life changed! I had a tool to use to facilitate healing of my body as well as emotional turmoil and limiting beliefs that kept me from being who I am today.

It truly is a life changing tool for everyone, not just people struggling with health challenges, like me.
EFT can be applied to just about everything…emotions, relationships, finances, limiting beliefs, parenting, and much more.
I use it frequently as an Occupational Therapist when a child is traumatized from sensory sensitivity, frustrated with handwriting, or scared to go to the doctor/dentist/school, etc. As a parent, I use it with my child when he is overreacting to small situations, tantrums, and anxious about change.
